Educational Materials: Are You at Risk for Colorectal Cancer? < back

There are several things that can increase your risk of colorectal cancer.

They include a personal history of polyps, colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or a family history of polyps or cancer. You can determine whether you are at an increased risk of developing polyps or colorectal cancer. Respond to the following questions by checking "Yes" or "NO".

1. Are you 50 years or older? YES NO

2. Have you had a colorectal polyp or colorectal cancer? YES NO

3. Have any of your first-degree relatives (parents, brothers, sisters, children) had polyps or colorectal cancer? YES NO

4. Has anyone in your family had polyps or colorectal cancer under age 50? YES NO

5. Do you eat more fats than fiber? YES NO

6. Have you had inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis? YES NO

If you answered "YES" to more than one of these questions, you are at increased risk for developing colorectal polyps or cancer. Talk with your physician about your risk and what screening guidelines you should follow.

If you did not answer "Yes" to more than one of these questions, you are likely at average risk for developing colorectal polyps or cancer and should adhere to the following screening recommendations for individuals at average risk:

Average Risk Standard Screening Recommendations

Beginning at age 50, recommended fecal occult blood test every year and a flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years.

Alternative Screening Recommendations

Beginning at age 50, recommended double contrast barium enema every 5-10 years or a colonoscopy every 10 years.

Please discuss screening options with your physician. Together you will decide on a screening program that is right for you.

You may want to check with your insurance company regarding coverage for screening procedures.

REMEMBER!
Screening recommendations are ONLY for individuals who have no symptoms. If you are currently experiencing a persistent change in bowel habits, bleeding with bowel movements, and/or abdominal pain, consult your physician immediately.
